Aviva Canada and MicroTraffic’s grant application is taking a proactive approach to road safety.
Close calls or near misses happen all the time. Usually, when a road user experiences one they’re a little shaken up but eventually move on from that experience without much thought.
We see these near misses differently. At Aviva, we believe that near misses can help cities better understand risks within intersections, and that modifications to intersections can make roads safer for all.
Through the Safe x Connected Cities Accelerator we’re working with a startup organization called MicroTraffic. They have an artificial intelligence tool that assesses intersection risk, based on near misses. It’s a Winnipeg based startup that utilizes traffic cameras to measure near-misses in intersections. The data collected is analyzed which can then be used to improve the built environment. The government can proactively intervene to change the signal timing, add signs, or even reconfigure the physical layout of the intersection. This is a proactive approach to improving the safety of our roads for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
To date, 35 governments have programmed more than $200M of road safety improvements using MicroTraffic's diagnostic technology.
We started MicroTraffic because we saw a problem with the old, reactive way of doing things in road safety. With MicroTraffic we're helping local governments take a proactive approach. We've seen results in cities where critical near-misses go down from 15 per day, to 0 per day using MicroTraffic's diagnostic data said Craig Milligan, CEO and Co-Founder, MicroTraffic
How will we work with MicroTraffic?
MicroTraffic has provided their service and analytics to many cities across North America, but we will help to extend their reach to more Canadian cities.
Over the next few months, we’re collaborating with MicroTraffic on a granting opportunity for cities across Canada (with a population of 100,000 +). Road safety and transportation departments/agencies will be eligible to apply and select up to five intersections within their city. We’ll base the selection of cities on a department or agencies commitment to road safety and collaboration.
The goal of this work is to expand the number of cities that MicroTraffic’s analysis is deployed in and to create safer roads across Canadian cities.
